New Quran Translation Accessible to 60 Million Speakers of Pulaar

The sacred text of Islam is now available in the Pulaar language, also known as Fulfulde. This is thanks to the Islam House association and the Guinean Center for Studies and Translation, who have been working on the project for four years.

This version is now available on the official website of the Encyclopedia of the Quran, which has been translated into 23 languages, including Hausa and Kiswahili. This translation aims to make the Quran accessible to the 60 million Pulaar speakers around the world.

The translation was a difficult task, as the translators had to stick as closely as possible to the spirit of the holy book, while making sure the language was understandable to all. This translation was released at the beginning of Ramadan, which is a time when the faithful search for information on the Revelation of the Quran.

In Senegal, a predominantly Muslim country, but where Arabic is little spoken, there is already a tradition of teaching the Quran in the national languages. At IFAN, the Fundamental Institute of Black Africa at Cheikh Anta Diop University, there is a rare manuscript, undated and unsigned, which contains the sacred text of the Koran with explanations in Pulaar language.

The project is not yet finished, as the Islam House association intends to embark on the translation of the Hadith, the words of the Holy Prophet 9pbuh). In addition, a paper version of the Quran in Pulaar should soon be available.

Pulaar is a Fula language spoken primarily as a first language by the Fula and Toucouleur peoples in the Senegal River valley area traditionally known as Futa Tooro and further south and east. Pulaar speakers, known as Haalpulaar'en live in Senegal, Mauritania, the Gambia, and western Mali.
